BONDI 5 — NORTHBOUND
  • Route: TR E of the coast from Long Bay headland (southern headland of Maroubra Beach) to Ben Buckler (northern headland of Bondi Beach)
  • Altitude: 500FT
  • Climb: Thence climb to not above 1,000FT and remain E of the coast to Sydney Heads
BONDI 5 — SPECIAL PROCEDURES
  • A. Route designated principally for single engine HEL. Delays may occur when 07 in use for DEP or 25 for ARR at YSSY.
  • B. Route NOT AVBL in either direction when RWY 16 PRM approaches are being conducted at YSSY.
  • C. In addition to ATC FREQ, pilots should maintain a listening watch on 120.8 for traffic on route VICTOR ONE (V1).
ROSEHILL 5 — INBOUND
  • Route: TR FM Rosehill Racecourse to Rookwood Cemetery, then via the Cooks River and Canterbury Racecourse to the Novotel (Sydney International Airport) Hotel
  • Altitude: 1,000FT

Before you get the clearance
  • You must be visual.
  • Report visual or runway in sight as soon as you can.
  • If ATC is turning you onto final, the turn will be 30 degrees or less.
  • Stay on DIR frequency until established on final.
The golden rule
  • Do not cross your runway centreline. Ever.
  • The other aircraft is right next to you on the parallel runway.
  • The ILS protected zone is not active during IVAs — don't rely on it.
Flying it
  • Track the extended centreline accurately.
  • Fly the headings ATC gives you accurately.
  • Watch your speed on base so you don't overshoot the turn onto final.

Traffic and TCAS
  • ATC will call traffic if another aircraft is within 1 NM on final.
  • Wake turbulence can still hit you even with proper separation — Sydney's runway layout makes it possible. Be ready.
  • TCAS RA: fly it exactly as your flight manual says. No exceptions. IVA ops do not change TCAS response.
If the radio dies or comms get jammed

If you can't talk to DIR for any reason:

  • Do not cross your assigned runway centreline.
  • Start your turn onto final for your assigned runway.
  • Track the extended centreline in.

Lost comms is not an excuse to drift across. Turn early if you have to.
